Reverend Dr. Harry Joseph Sanders, a devoted pastor and cherished member of the Minonk community, passed away peacefully on January 17th, 2025 at the age of 85. Born on August 14th, 1939 in Monongahela, PA, he spent his life serving others with unwavering faith, compassion, and generosity.
Harry earned a Bachelors, a Masters, and a Doctorate degree from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary. He also earned a Masters degree in History from Northwestern University. One day after receiving his bachelor’s degree, he married his college sweetheart, Shirley Olmsted, originally from West Allis, WI. They were married for 62 years. He served as a pastor for 37 years, 34 of those at First Baptist Church of Minonk where his impactful three-point sermons and compassionate ministry touched many lives.
Pastor Sanders’ writings from the church’s monthly newsletter were compiled in the book Sourdough and Soul Food. He also served on the mission board of the American Baptist Churches, participated in multiple mission trips and, after retirement, filled in for area ministers across The Great Rivers Region.
In addition to his pastoral work, Harry had a passion for woodworking and model railroads. He crafted much of his own furniture and created special pieces for his children and grandchildren, leaving behind a tangible legacy of his love and craftsmanship. He also served for many years on the Minonk Ambulance Squad.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Sanders of Minonk, IL; two sons, Robert (Mandy) Sanders of Franklin, WI, and Timothy (Tammy) Sanders of Minonk, IL; grandchildren, Brandon (Cass) Sanders of Edmond, OK, Brianne (Zach) Miller of Gridley, IL, and Brady (Alexandra) Sanders of Normal, IL. Also surviving are 4 great grandchildren, Braxton, Audree, Creed, and Maveric Sanders of Edmond, OK, and another great-granddaughter expected in February. One sister, Pat Sanders of Washington, PA, also survives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Edna Sanders; his brother, Bob Sanders; and one grandson, Brett Timothy Sanders.
Visitation will be held on Monday, January 20th, 2025 from 4:00 to 7:00 at Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home in Minonk. A memorial service will be Tuesday, January 21st, at 11:00 at First Baptist Church of Minonk. Rev. Jim Wolfe will officiate. Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home in Minonk is handling arrangements for the family.
